Can Ashok Leyland Capitalize its Strong Growth in African Nations (Ethiopia, South Sudan, South Africa, etc.)

The competition in the Automobile sector in India is strong, with newer players making entries more frequently than ever. And, in such a competitive environment, Dheeraj Hinduja's Ashok Leyland has once again proven its strong hold in the Indian automotive segments as it stands as one of India's leading automobile giants and manufacturers of commercial vehicles. While Ashok Leyland is a common household name here in India, very few are aware of its presence in other countries. This year’s Q3 results for the company saw them export 4151 units to international markets.

If there is one place on Earth where the Dheeraj Hinduja-led company is witnessing a surge in demand for its vehicles, it is the continent of Africa. Keeping this in mind, the company has a good expansion opportunity and should consider taking its production operations to other parts of the continent, like South Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt.

Why the expansion strategy in South Sudan may work?

South Sudan is one of Africa’s youngest economies, achieving freedom in 2011.  The country is keen on changing its status as a least developed country (LDC), a title it received in 2012. The demand for vehicles over there is growing, as the country upgrades its infrastructure and transportation. Ashok Leyland is financially strong, something that their executive chairman, Dheeraj Hinduja, has always been vocal about.

This year, the company’s stock reached an all-time high of 178.25, showcasing the growth and success the company has achieved over the years. With such strong financial backing and rising demand for their vehicles, setting up a production plant in South Sudan may not be a bad idea for Ashok Leyland’s expansion plans.

Can Africa Switch to Switch Mobility?

Switch Mobility is Ashok Leyland’s EV arm, taking charge of the production of electric vehicles for the commercial vehicle maker. EV is the future, and the future is here. Keeping this in mind, Ashok Leyland has a great chance to enter this segment. They have already partnered with several local distributors across Africa. There’s an ETG that caters to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Doshi Motors helps them with distribution in Sudan (South) and in parts of East Africa and West Africa. Setting up a production plant can help boost the economy, as the automotive sector has consistently created employment in abundance, enabling many in countries like South Sudan, Ethiopia, etc.

The Hinduja Group, which is known to make investments in newly formed sectors, can not only strengthen its position in South Sudan through new investments but also help the country export vehicles to other nations and improve its GDP, and benefit the locals on a large scale.
